SLAPSTICK
Project Type: Editorial
Date: 2021
Description: 'SLAPSTICK' is a project which was submitted for ISTD Assessment in 2021, and followed the ‘Silence is Golden’ brief. The aim was to produce an outcome that celebrated the world of silent cinema. It could focus on a single element of the era, or alternatively, a spectrum of stories that you may wish to tell. I opted to focus on one element, and that was slapstick comedy, which in many ways made silent cinema what it is remembered for in the modern-day, thanks to the likes of Charlie Chaplin, Buster Keaton, Mabel Williams and Laurel & Hardy, just to name a few. The piece explores these key players, as well as slapstick’s origins, the importance it had in the period of silent cinema itself, and finally, where slapstick is at in the current day, as a result of the silent era.
As per terms of the ISTD competition submission, entrants are required to produce a process book, showing the different changes the project goes through over its course, as well as a series and systems document, showing the specifics of the project (page size, stock, margins, typefaces, hierarchy etc). Both can be found below also.
